St. Mary's Portchester from its churchyard
This Norman church - dating from c. 1135 - is situated within the Roman walls of Portchester Castle. See numerous other photos for this square. It's a pity that the new building seen here to the south of this wonderful old church could not have been built in a more sympathetic style, but I suppose I've seen worse. The Romanesque West Door seen here is particularly fine, a close-up can be seen here SU6204 : Romanesque West Door, St. Mary's, Portchester
