City Walls above the Kaleyard Gate
City Walls above the Kaleyard Gate
From here the city walls continue over the Kaleyard Gate towards the Phoenix Tower in the distance. The path to the left drops down to the gate and also to Abbey Street. Immediately on the right, carved into the stone parapet, is an anchor and '692Ft'. This refers to the length of Brunel's ship the Great Eastern, and indicates the distance between this point and the Phoenix Tower. In the 19th century a local man commissioned a stone mason to carve the stone. Some short distance beyond the Phoenix Tower I have discovered another single anchor carved into the parapet overlooking the canal. I don't know whether that second anchor has any connection with this one. Thanks to the 'bwpics' website for the information LinkExternal link
