Fountains Bridge, West Gate
Fountains Bridge, West Gate
Fountains Bridge carries the road past the end of West Gate as it has done for centuries. If you stand under the arches (in the summer) the upstream side of the bridge is ribbed (probably the original medieval bridge built by the monks), and the downstream side is later, probably 17th or 18th C, when traffic increased. It has a weight limit of 3 Tonnes, although this is often ignored by local farm contractors.
