The Isokon building, Lawn Road
This spectacular apartment block was built in the 1930's as a Le Corbusier-influenced experiment in modern living: there was a communal kitchen and restaurant, the Isobar, and a wide range of domestic services was provided. It was aimed at young professionals but became home to a number of arty refugees from Nazi Germany who were attracted by its idealist design. Agatha Christie was another resident. The building fell into disrepair after the war and has only recently been turned into desirable accommodation again, this time as flats for key workers. See Link
