SX9266 : Petit Tor Downs

taken 10 years ago, near to Babbacombe, Torbay, Great Britain

Petit Tor Downs
Petit Tor Downs
A fine grassy ridgetop, narrowing between the wooded cliffs on either side, runs down seaward for nearly 300 metres from the end of Petitor Road.

The notice is perhaps correct in theory, but in practice there is no obstruction on the path down to Little Oddicombe Beach. However, what is both closed and obstructed for many years now, is a stretch of the coast path immediately south of this point. (Doubtless the two are related as it would be the same stretch of cliff). The maps still show a right of way there, but the route of the coastal path seems to have shifted permanently inland. Perhaps that is why the shelter near it has been demolished - the platform is at the extreme right. However, a seat remains.
