St Botolph's Church in Barford - the shady northern side
St Botolph's church is situated on the northwestern edge of the village of Barford, surrounded by fields. The church church > LinkExternal link was built in several stages, beginning in the 12th century. The nave was rebuilt in about 1470 and extensive restoration work was carried out in Victorian times. The rood screen > LinkExternal link is believed to be original, albeit overpainted. It is said to once have had and inscription and the royal arms of Queen Elizabeth I on the tympanum above it. There also used to be a musician's gallery but this was taken down in the mid-1800s. The church houses a number of memorial slabs > LinkExternal link to members of the Sedley family, the local Lords of the Manor.
