One of the Class 504 electric units of which there were only about 22, as the Manchester to Bury line used a unique system of electrification, at 1200V DC with side-contact third rail. Some of the units, as this one, were in the Greater Manchester PTE orange and brown livery. It was known that the units would soon be withdrawn, as the line was being converted to the Metrolink tramway, so they only received minimum maintenance, and although they were fast, the interiors were extremely scruffy and some units were running with hardboard in the place of windows. They were frequently the subject of graffiti attacks, as they were normally parked in the open at Bury when not in use.
