Baile Hill
Baile Hill
The site of the first Norman castle to be built in York. Erected on the orders of William I during the years immediately following the conquest. It was surmounted by a wooden stockade, which was burnt during the uprising of the north in 1069. The mound was heightened in 1644 to carry several guns during the siege of York. The hill has been covered with trees since 1722.
