Willoughby Monument
Willoughby Monument
The capacious yet relatively uninteresting church of St.James is famous for this small corner chapel and its seven Willoughby monuments. This tomb to Katherine and Richard occupies the entire west wall and has a crudely carved monk and two wild men in support. Katherine was Baroness Willoughby D'Eresby in her own right and Duchess of Suffolk by her first marriage, she died in 1580, Richard Bertie died in 1582. They were great supporters of the Protestant Reformation and fled to Continental Europe during the reign of Queen Mary.
