Standing stone, Nether Silton [detail]
The inscription on this stone has for long been a mystery. It is thought to be some sort of code. Recently I came across a solution to the code, but have no way of knowing if the answer is correct. The code may be the first letters of the following words....
Here the good old manor house stood
The black beams were oak, the great walls were good
The walls at the east wing are hidden here
A thatched cottage like a barn was erected here
A wide porch spans a yard and alcove. [attributed to Squire Hicks in the 18thC]
