There are eight windows on the two sides of the building facing the roads. Each one is dedicated to a literary "great" (as perceived in the 1900s). The library was built during 1900-02 by E. T. Hare on the site of the demolished Theatre Royal.
MILTON, SHAKSPEAR, POPE, DRYDEN, SHELLEY, BYRON, CHAUCER and SPENSER.
