Former industrial area, using the fast flowing Water of Leith. New Town houses can be seen high above the river.
The Water of Leith is now celebrated as a real hill river in the city centre, complete with the usual wildlife seen out in unpolluted rural rivers: Kingfishers, Dippers, Grey Wagtails are frequently seen here, and otters have returned.
The inscription on the lintel is: "God bless the baxters of Edinbrugh [sic]who built this house 1675". The Ancient Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) had a long association with Dean Village, where there were several mills which provided the baxters with flour.
