Chain ferry post at Twyford
Chain ferry post at Twyford
This post and a corresponding one on the other side held the chain for a ferry which until the building of the bridge at Willington provided the only river crossing for miles around. It remained in occasional use into the 1930's and was still extant in the late 1950's.
