Tree, Stone Quarry Bottom, New Forest
Tree, Stone Quarry Bottom, New Forest
This tree is on the slopes of Deadman Hill, just above the mire in Stone Quarry Bottom. Unlike the surrounding dry heath, the ground is free of heather and bracken and instead has a covering of well-cropped grass. I assume that the tree attracts ponies and cattle (for its shade and shelter) and they thus they prefer to graze there, keeping the heather from returning. I think the tree is a thorn of some kind. See the following for a view from a different angle: SU1916 : Tree, Stone Quarry Bottom, New Forest.
