Rare Breed Shetland Cattle
Rare Breed Shetland Cattle
The information sign describes the beasts here as Shetland Cattle. Shetland Cattle are believed to be Scandinavian in origin and were well suited for crofters on their smallholdings due to their smaller than average size (8.5 cwt for a cow and 12 cwt for a bull). The Rare Breeds Survival Trust lists these cattle as Category 3 (Vulnerable), meaning less than 450 adult breeding females.
