The station was established in 1837, using a lightvessel. The Admiralty List of Lights of 1887 positions the vessel at 52 34 40 N, 01 46 50 E. In 1930 the position was 5232N 0148E (approx). The station was given two names: Hewett Channel and St. Nicholas Gat, and was Admiralty List of Lights No. 141 (this number was reassigned to another station when St. Nicholas was discontinued).

In 1887 the light character was one fixed white light with one red flash every 10 seconds; in 1919, the character had changed completely, to show a revolving green light every twenty seconds.
