SX5692 : Multi-purpose Stoneblower

taken 10 years ago, near to Meldon, Devon, Great Britain

Multi-purpose Stoneblower.
Multi-purpose Stoneblower.
This machine owned by Network Rail has recently been imported for use on the railways of Britain. It is photographed here at Meldon Quarry where it has been undergoing setting up of computer control and crew training on Dartmoor Railway.
The idea of this machine No.DR 80301, is to automatically lift and pack the sleepers with small grade ballast, which is blown under the sleepers to level the track. Totally self contained, the machine can cover a great deal of track without the use of a large gang of workmen, as was the case in the past, thus saving time and manpower.
