Former Portsoy Parish Kirk
Former Portsoy Parish Kirk
This building dominates the main road through Portsoy. It dates from 1815, though the tower, by Charles Cosser, was not added until 1876. 'The Buildings of Scotland' describes it as the former parish kirk, but Portsoy is in the parish of Fordyce, and the original parish kirk is in the village of Fordyce, so when it was built it must have been an additional kirk to serve the town, whose population by then was larger than that of the village of Fordyce NJ5563 : A profusion of crocuses by Fordyce Church of Scotland., which dates from 1804 and was closed in 2011. After the merger of Church of Scotland and Free Church, the former Free Kirk became NJ5865 : Fordyce Parish Church and I believe that this one is now in use as the church hall.
