Old cultivation terraces near Thorpe
Old cultivation terraces near Thorpe
Cultivation terraces [or plough strips] on the hillside to the north of Thorpe. The low winter sun helps to pick out the terraces running along the contours and through the walls which were built later. The terraces are probably medieval, but could be earlier. Such terraces are common in Wharfedale, particularly on the easier worked soils of the limestone areas.
