At first sight this could be taken for a shrub; closer examination reveals that a small brick building, totally overgrown with ivy, is hiding underneath the lush vegetation - beside > TG1627 : Aylsham Road on the edge of > TG1627 : Hercules Wood. The building was a pump house serving the two RAF Oulton campsites adjoining it in the west and south-west.
RAF Oulton
The Oulton airfield opened in 1940, originally as a satellite to Horsham St Faith (now Norwich International Airport). It hosted a variety of light bomber squadrons flying mainly Blenheims. By September 1942 the airfield had become a satellite to RAF Swanton Morley. After the grass airstrips were lengthened and concreted, they were used by the 100 Group. RAF and USAAF specialist radio-countermeasures units arrived, one of their tasks being to investigate the radio-control equipment behind the V-2 rocket.

After the war, the airfield was put under Care and Maintenance and used for storing Mosquito fighter aircraft and Horsa gliders until it was closed in 1947.
