Cleared area in the Churchplace Inclosure, New Forest
The Churchplace Inclosure, established in the 1870s, is a "working" area of the New Forest and this photo shows an area that has recently been cleared, leaving behind only stumps and a few logs. The trees on the far side of the cleared area show how much of the tree is for support, with the photosynthesising "business end" very much at the top. The conifer canopy is very dense and little can grow beneath.
