Site of coal mine, Tong Royd, Elland
The mine is shown as Storth Colliery on the 1850 6 inch map, but by the 1930s it was called Fire Clay Brick Works (Disused). It seems, however, from the following information from websites that mining still took place. From the Peak District Historical Mines Society Ltd., in 1896 it was owned by T. Blocksage of Elland, and there were 6 miners and 1 surface worker. Manufacturing coal and fireclay were extracted. From Rootsweb, in 1945 it was owned by David Sharratt & Sons Ltd., who employed 15 miners and 2 surface workers in this mine and Storth Nos 1 & 2 mines nearby.
