Eastern end of a hollow way, Ridley Wood, New Forest
This hollow way leads west out of Ridley Wood, and further on it has sunk about 8 feet below the level of the wood - it is an old entrance to the wood (which was enclosed in medieval times) from the ford across Ridley Bottom to the west. The way was deepened over the centuries by traffic and rainwash. A much smaller version is in the process of forming on the more recent path immediately to the north - this way is not viable any more as it is boggy underfoot and partly overgrown with holly. There are stories that this secluded hollow was a meeting place for forest smugglers and their customers in the late 1700s- it is close to the "Smugglers' Road".
