Meini Veracius & Senacus Stones
Meini Veracius & Senacus Stones
These stones, now preserved in St Hywyn's Aberdaron, bear clear inscriptions to two early Christian priests of the late 5th or early 6th century. They are undressed river boulders, but elaborately carved.
The left-hand stone reads:
VERACIUS
PBR
HIC
IACIT
(Veracius the priest lies here)
The right-hand stone has a longer inscription:
SENACUS
PRSB
HIC IACIT
CUMMULTITU
DNEM
FRATRUM
(Senacus the priest lies here with many brethren)
A later inscription at the foot of the stone reads PRESBYTER (PRIEST)
