Steps to the crypt, New Moat
There is a barrel-vaulted crypt beneath the church in which lie the remains of members of the Scourfield family, local gentry who resided in a now-demolished mansion called the Motte or Mote (site of an ancient castle). The vaults were opened in the 1970's and were found to contain 11 lead coffins from 1787 onwards in their original drapery (hangings and coats of arms) together with the bones of a greyhound. A greyhound features on the family crest and it was said the Motte was built on the proceeds of a bet on a dog!
