The traditional pieces of land, or gardens, which were allocated to the terraced houses were located across an access lane at the rear. The growing season was relatively short, as this location is some 700 feet above sea level. Of course, leeks were grown by many, but so too were many useful vegetables. In the distance, plantations of conifers can be seen. Much of this land had been exploited by the coal board and there had been pits beneath the houses. Later, much of the land was to be opencasted round about.
