The Flats, Kimmeridge Bay
The Flats, Kimmeridge Bay, taken 9 years ago
This is the section of The Flats beneath the oil well in Kimmeridge Bay. In the foreground is a cross-section through The Flats dolomite bed. The Flats display expansion megapolygons - on the left a 'breaking wave' thrust has trapped water to make a shallow rock-pool. Near the top of the cliff, sloping down to the right, is the Washing Ledge dolomite bed. Dolomite is a sedimentary carbonate rock, and the inclusion of small amounts of iron give it a yellow-brown tint.
