Wansford Lock
Wansford Lock
The upper gate of the disused lock on the Driffield Canal, Wansford. The Driffield Navigation was authorized by an Act of Parliament in 1767 and by 1817 a regular steam packet service was carrying passengers from Driffield all the way to Hull. The coming of the railway in 1846 led to a decline in commercial traffic and the last keel travelled to Driffield in the late 1940's, after which time the canal gradually fell into disrepair.
