Mad Allen's Hole
Mad Allen's Hole
A late nineteenth-century eccentric, Mad Allen, lived in this cave at Bickerton.
Mad Allen's Hole is a natural, two storey cave. The circular hole at the back of the cave provides easy access to both levels with the use of a small ladder. The great boulders that block the entrance to the cave would have formed a huge natural overhang, under which a timber front could have been built. No material evidence is easily visible on this site dating to the 18th. century. A recent rock fall has buried the front talus.
