Iron post, Iron Row, Burley in Wharfedale
A mystery object. It is next to the end of Iron Row, mill-workers cottages built c.1800 by the mill-owners Greenwood and Whitaker. This information is from A History of Burley-in-Wharfedale, by Frank Newbould. He remembered that at least one of the houses had an iron door, and others had more heavy iron protection. There is a tradition that this was a defence against the Luddites. When built, the name was New Row, and was changed to Iron Row by 1848.
