SD9790 : Danger ... bell pit

Danger ... bell pit
Danger ... bell pit
Some walkers sheltering from a chilly February breeze in a dangerous hollow. This circular mound and central depression is what is left of a lead-mining bell pit. The entrance to the vertical shaft is in the centre of the hollow and was covered by wooden planks and turf when the pit was abandoned. But that was many years ago and as the ancient timbers rot away there is real danger that anyone putting their weight on them might end up fifty feet or so down a disused shaft.
