Coring on the former lake bed at Hawes Water
Environmental change students from Edge Hill University use a Russian corer to extract Micrite core samples from depths of up to six metres under the watchful eye of Dr Nigel Richardson. Evidence of environmental change over the last 11,000 years can be seen in the compositional changes visible in the cores with depth. The former lake bed now has a rough grassland/bracken appearance but in the 18th and 19th centuries a thick surface layer of peat was cut for use as fuel.
