Stone face at Sproxton South Quarry
Stone face at Sproxton South Quarry
Both quarries at Sproxton provide one of the finest and most complete sections of the lower Lincolnshire Limestone Formation with underlying Grantham and Northampton Sand Formation. The sedimentary features of the Lower Lincolnshire Formation have caused these quarries to be given SSSI status with particular reference to small scale cycles and rare ammonites.
Both limestone and sandstone were quarried at this site, mainly for building purposes.
See SK8625 for pictures of Sproxton North Quarry.
Note the frozen rippled surface of the pool: there must have been a slight breeze during the subzero temperatures overnight.
