Red squirrel
Red squirrel
This is one of two squirrels who were feeding on larch cones in a tree right beside the road, and they carried on feeding even when I stopped and reversed back up the road to take photos out of the car window - until I switched off the engine, at which they took off at high speed into the trees! At present there is still a healthy population of red squirrels in Galloway, but unfortunately greys are moving steadily westwards from Dumfriesshire, carrying with them squirrel pox virus to which the reds have little immunity, and their long term outlook seems grim.
