The river bed is stained by ochre - a mixture of clay and iron oxide. The packhorse road over the moors is called 'Rape's Highway' and was almost lost in 1908 when the Lord of the Manor, Sir Joseph Radcliffe, disputed that it was a right-of-way. Its status was established in a court case and it is marked by stone posts, inscribed 'PH Road', erected by Marsden UDC. The moor is now owned by the National Trust.
