Victoria Avenue Tunnel, Leeds Bradford International Airport
Victoria Avenue Tunnel, Leeds Bradford International Airport
The cut-and-cover tunnel was constructed in the 1980s to facilitate the extension of the airport runway to its present length. A separate tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians can be seen on the right. The construction is in-situ reinforced concrete in a portal frame, thereby eliminating joints along the line of the carriageways. Transverse construction joints are waterproofed on the upper side of the roof slab. the tunnel was designed to take DC10 and 747 aircraft. A special check was necessary to ensure that Concorde could safely taxi on take-off over the tunnel.
