Copper slag is a by product of brass making which was a major industry in Bristol and the surrounding area during the 18th and 19th centuries.
When the slag was drawn off it was run into moulds to make blocks which made excellent building material. It was tough and durable, whole buildings were sometimes made of it. There are many examples of its use to be found in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Here it is used as coping stones in a boundary wall of Kelston Park.
