This tract of infertile land centred on SH4143 is part of a classic area of glaciofluvial sedimentation features. The retreat northwards of the Irish Sea Ice Sheet to beyond the Eifl and Gurn hills, and of the Welsh Ice Sheet into mountains of Snowdonia (seen in the background) gave rise to conditions favourable to the formation of a highly complex outwash plain in a triangular area extending inland from the coast between Pwllheli and Criccieth northwards towards Penygroes. Some of the Grade 5 agricultural land between the A499 and A498 has been planted with forests, much of the rest provides rough grazing for sheep.
