St Mary's Font, Slaugham
St Mary's Font, Slaugham
Inside a Sussex Wealden church which goes back to Norman roots. It is maybe built on the site of an earlier Saxon building. There are now no pews, only chairs in an arc, facing the pulpit against the north wall.

[From Miguel Torrens at Oxford University, many thanks:
"This is a most interesting font, Norman, probably 12th-century. What makes it rather unique is the image on one side that does not appear on this image. B1 has plants, B2 has the blind arcade, and one of B3 or B4 has a fish, very much attempting to be a whale. A few fonts have representations of fish, the early symbol of the Christian faith, as its Greek name contain the initials of Christ's name. Most of these are either very 'generic', or rather trout-like.
I.e., a representation of a species of fish commonly known to the people
who carved and saw the font on a day-to-day basis. This fish is neither. It has snout, 'legs'..."]
