Wheeldale Road
Wheeldale Road
Also known as Wade's Causeway, this ancient road is shown on the OS map as a Roman road. However a signboard at the site suggest that its origin is uncertain. Unlike a typical Roman road, it is surfaced with stone slabs rather than gravel, and has many slight changes of direction.

Some archeologists believe the road may have been built late in the Roman era when standards of road building had changed. In the 4th century Saxons regularly raided the coast, and the road may have lead to the Roman signal stations near Whitby. Others now believe it may even predate the Romans.
