Fa'side Castle
Fa'side Castle
A 15C tower house near Tranent in East Lothian. The name Fa'side has various spellings [e.g. Ffauside, Fauxside, Fawsyde, Falside and Fawside]. The name was first recorded in the reign of David I (1124-1153), and the earliest known record relating to the lands of Fa'side is a charter granted by the monks of Newbattle Abbey granted in 1189 to Saier de Quency. Since that time Fa'side has passed through several families including the Fawsides, the De Quencys and the Setons. It is a striking and imposing building with walls up to 6 feet thick and the southern gable end has 50 feet high turrets in each corner. It is thought it was uninhabited by 1748 and since then became ruinous and permission was twice granted for demolition. It was, however, bought in 1976 and restored by a local engineer. The nearly restored castle was sold late 1980s, and again in 1989, and it is still a family home.
