Pistyll from the west
The romantics tend to think of Pistyll in the past as a village with a monoglot population. One look at the 1881 census soon dispels such notions. Unlike the slate quarrying communities of Snowdonia which were largely closed shop communities where non-Welsh speakers were just not welcomed, those associated with the granite quarrying industry in North Lleyn attracted a substantial number of workers from England, Scotland and Ireland.
