SO4520 : Edge of the woodland NE of Skenfrith Castle

taken 9 years ago, near to Skenfrith, Monmouthshire/Sir Fynwy, Great Britain

Edge of the woodland NE of Skenfrith Castle
Edge of the woodland NE of Skenfrith Castle
The foreground trees mark the course of the River Monnow. The wooded hill is just in Wales with the national border in the adjoining square.
A medieval castle wharf was discovered here in 2003 and has been re-buried to protect it. Imagine this scene with a massive dockyard wall projecting into the river. The wharf may have been in use during the building of the castle (1219-32).
