The Council Oak in late winter, Coate Water, Swindon
The oak tree was mentioned by the Victorian author Richard Jefferies in a novel entitled 'Bevis, the story of a boy'. Jefferies was a minor writer and never really attained national fame. He is still revered locally and there is an active Richard Jefferies society Link
He was born very near Coate Water and his birthplace is now a museum dedicated to his memory. It can be seen here SU1782 : Richard Jefferies Museum, Coate, Swindon, Wiltshire. A memorial exists (shared with the other local writer of note, Alfred Williams).
