Up to WWII sea transport was the most economical way of transferring granite sets and aggregates from the North Lleyn quarries to market. At one time, Carreg-y-Llam had two jetties but the west jetty was damaged by storms. For much of the time loading was by shutes using tip over tubs running on a tramway.
Later bins linked to the jetty by a conveyor belt were built.
