The coastal path on the west side of Portland
The large blocks of stone were positioned during the 19th century when Portland had 69 independent quarries. They carried narrow gauge railway lines allowing trucks of spoil to be tipped over the cliff on West Weares (Weares is an old word for waste). Chesil Beach in the background.
