Geologically speaking, this bus shelter exposure shows is folding in a sequence of rocks called the Hope Shales. Normally the shales are layers of mudstone (hardened silt and clay deposited on the sea floor), but here some of the layers are so-called Chinastone Ash - layers of volcanic ash which fell onto the sea from a volcano somewhere out further west at the time (during the Ordovician Period, approx 450 million years ago) in an episode similar to the Icelandic eruption last year. The folding itself came about towards the end of the Ordovician Period as two continental plates collided, eliminating ultimately the ocean that had separated England and Wales from Scotland! Sea levels then dropped (during an ice age) so the folded rocks became exposed and somewhat eroded, before sea levels rose again and deposited sand in layers as it advanced over the older Ordovician rocks.
