Wychwood School for Girls
Wychwood School for Girls
These two houses facing Banbury Road, plus two more round the corner in Bardwell Road, constitute an independent school for middle-class gals that originated in 1897 and acquired this site in 1918. The school was named after the forest (see SP3217 : Road through Wychwood Forest) surrounding the home of one of the lady founders, and the emphasis was, and is, on democratic self-government complete with a school council.
In 1960 the two buildings were joined together in an unsightly fashion that was once used as an illustration of architectural faux-pas.
