In 1917 the Royal Navy built a seaplane base here to protect the nearby port. Built initially with wooden hangars they were replaced in 1918 by metal hangars of which only the concrete hardstanding and the metal and the twin rails used to open the front doors remain. The base closed in 1919 and was briefly a concrete factory making piles for the nearby East Pier until that too closed. The metal hangars were moved to Wimbledon in 1923 where they still remain.
