Nant Quarry, Porth y Nant
Nant Quarry, Porth y Nant
The quarry had a number of working levels (ponciau in Welsh) with names such as Bonc Isa (lower gallery) Bonc Bach, Bonc Sir Fon (Anglesey gallery) and the more exotic Bonc Buenos Aires and Bonc Palestina (the later having been developed by an ex-RWF man who had fought in Palestine in WWI). The quarry was worked on the bargain system with workers allocated certain sections of the quarry to work. Wages were paid fortnightly based on the output. If a man was off through illness or met with an accident at work neither he nor his family received any payment. Dr Huw T Edwards, later North Wales secretary of the TGWU, wrote how his father was badly injured by a rockfall at Nant and how the family were saved from destitution by the generosity of the Irish labourers who every fortnight and for months on end had a whip round for the family.
